Loredana Sansavini

Artist Identity
Loredana Sansavini is an Italian photographer working in the field of contemporary photography. Her research focuses on the relationship between perception, presence, and representation, with particular attention to spaces and subjects that resist immediate interpretation.
Her work often investigates situations in which familiar forms, functions, or meanings are reduced, suspended, or rendered uncertain. Through a minimal and rigorous visual language, she explores how images can reveal what remains when action, narrative, and intention are no longer central.
Rather than constructing scenes, her approach is based on observation and adherence to what is already present. This process allows subtle perceptual shifts to emerge, in which the visible is not defined by what it represents, but by how the gaze encounters it.
Her way of seeing has also been shaped by many years of practice in disciplines devoted to attention and awareness, within a Buddhist-oriented tradition and through the distinctive teaching of the Masters Franco Bertossa and Beatrice Benfenati of the ASIA Association in Bologna. These experiences have contributed to developing a method grounded in clarity, precision, and reduction to the essential.
Her work is oriented toward an essential and open visual language, in which meaning is not imposed, but allowed to emerge through the act of looking.

When Meaning Fades
THE STORY
There are moments when what we see is immediately familiar to us. We recognize a face, a toy, a carousel, an object. We know what they are.
These photographs emerged from observing familiar objects in everyday places, at the moment when this automatic process of recognition began to falter.
The objects remain recognizable, but their appearance is no longer familiar, no longer obvious. The form through which we recognize them begins to dissolve and, with it, so does the meaning we attribute to them. For an instant, what we know becomes strange.
I am not interested in telling the story of these objects being abandoned, nor in explaining what happened to them. I am interested in that brief interval in which recognition falters and things reveal themselves, with no longer any reference to something else that might explain or justify them.
The meanings we encounter in life — love, work, art, faith, ethics, ideals — are all meanings we construct within the fact of existing. But none of them explains why existence itself is there.
And yet things do not disappear. They remain.
It is at this point that photography can open a fracture: when what belongs to life — forms, events, meanings, memory — falls away, a meaning may emerge that is not another content, but a saying that says without being there.
The sequence moves from the recognizable toward the dissolution of form and meaning, until what remains is simply there, in its strangeness.
And perhaps it is precisely then that the question is no longer what we see, but what it means to exist.

When Meaning Fades
THE WORK
Photographic series — 6 images
When Meaning Fades is a photographic series in which familiar objects gradually lose the forms and meanings through which they are normally recognized. The six images move from immediate recognition toward estrangement, leaving the objects present but deprived of the meanings ordinarily attributed to them.
